Every ERP customization, integration, and report ultimately hits the database tier. For several years, our team worked extensively with Oracle Database Cloud Service (DBCS) — Oracle's managed Oracle Database offering on OCI — to run the data layer underneath ERP landscapes like E-Business Suite and Fusion Applications.
Our engagement spanned four areas:
Production ERP databases were paired with standby databases via Oracle Data Guard, with switchover drills run periodically to prove failover actually worked. ASM disk group layouts were designed around ERP I/O profiles, separating data, redo, and archive logs with headroom for close-cycle growth.
Backups ran through DBCS's native RMAN automation to Object Storage, with regular restore validation rather than assumed success from job logs. Connectivity used TCPS with wallet-based authentication, secured through VCN security lists and Network Security Groups.
Patches followed Oracle's quarterly Release Update cadence, tested in non-production first and coordinated against ERP application-tier patching. AWR/ASH analysis drove SQL tuning for ERP-specific batch jobs, since a handful of slow queries could bottleneck an entire month-end close.
Predictable load spikes around ERP close cycles shaped capacity and storage headroom planning.
BYOL vs. license-included and Standard vs. Enterprise Edition decisions required careful mapping against existing licensing agreements.
Database Release Updates had to stay in sync with application-tier patching to keep the full stack in a supported configuration.
Oracle Database Cloud Service has been rebranded as Oracle Base Database Service on OCI, sitting deliberately between fully managed Autonomous Database and self-managed Database on OCI compute. For ERP data tiers, that middle ground is usually the right fit — schema-level control and tuning access, without the full operational burden of self-management.
The rebrand doesn't change our approach: rigorous failover testing, I/O-driven storage design, and validated backups carry forward regardless of what Oracle calls the service, and hybrid architectures pairing on-premises RAC/Exadata with OCI for DR and burst capacity are increasingly how our ERP clients structure their estates.
