Modernizing ERP Extensions in the Cloud

Enterprise Resource Planning systems rarely stay "out of the box." Custom approval workflows, integration adapters, and self-service portals inevitably get bolted onto ERP cores like E-Business Suite (EBS) and Fusion Applications — and for years, our team ran that custom layer on Oracle Java Cloud Service (JCS), Oracle's managed WebLogic Server PaaS.

What We Did

Our engagement covered the full lifecycle:

  • Legacy Migration: Migrating legacy on-premises WebLogic domains hosting ERP extensions onto JCS.
  • Custom Java EE Development: Building new Java EE extensions from scratch for clients extending EBS and Fusion Applications.
  • Managed Cloud Operations: Running managed operations (patching, monitoring, backup/DR) on production JCS environments.
  • Architecture Consulting: Providing architecture consulting to size topologies and plan cloud adoption roadmaps.

How We Built It

Production extensions ran on clustered WebLogic Managed Servers behind Oracle Traffic Director, with session replication for uninterrupted approval workflows. Database connectivity used multi-data-source failover against Oracle Database Cloud Service (DBCS) or on-premises ERP databases.

Integration back to the ERP core ran through Oracle SOA Suite and Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC), with authentication federated via Oracle Identity Cloud Service (IDCS) so ERP roles carried through seamlessly to custom portals.

Deployments were scripted with WLST and driven through Maven/Jenkins pipelines rather than manual console pushes, and Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control gave us clear visibility into JVM and connection pool health during peak ERP periods like month-end close.

Challenges We Navigated

Peak ERP Close Spikes

Sharp, predictable load spikes around ERP close cycles shaped our capacity planning.

Database Proximity

Keeping the extension tier close to the ERP database tier was a constant architectural constraint.

Sequenced Patching

WebLogic patch cycles had to be sequenced carefully against ERP patching windows.

Where Oracle Cloud is Headed

Oracle Java Cloud Service reached end of life on May 31, 2025, with Oracle now recommending WebLogic Server for OCI as the path forward. For ERP extension workloads, this is more continuation than pivot — the clustered, automation-first architecture patterns we built carry forward directly onto WebLogic Server for OCI.

Clients who invested in infrastructure-as-code and loosely coupled extensions are migrating with the least friction, and that's the discipline we now recommend to every ERP client weighing modernization, regardless of which Oracle PaaS layer they land on.
